Aviary’s impressive collection of online editing tools is now completely free. The site has pushed the boundaries of what web applications could do by developing full-featured image and audio editing apps, among several others.
Previously, Aviary offered stripped down versions of their editing software for free. Purchasing a subscription unlocked additional features, removed Aviary’s watermark, and also allowed you to save files directly on the site. Now everyone has access to these benefits.
The New York-based company attributes the move to a recent round of funding in its blog post:
We have long felt that to better serve our core mission our complete feature set needed to be in the hands of everyone – not just those who could afford it. Fortunately, our recent round of funding (by Spark Capital, Bezos Expeditions & others) enables us to finally achieve this goal as we shift revenues opportunities to other exciting areas that don’t limit individuals in any way. We are excited at the opportunity to stay true to our mission. Not many companies are so fortunate.
It’s unclear what those revenue opportunities are, aside from an increased reliance on ads. Aviary released an API back in April that allowed anyone to embed its services on their sites. The company could pursue deals with bigger sites to implement its services, similar to its competitor Picnik’s deal with Flickr, but that may betray the point of releasing its API.
Aviary also competes with Adobe’s Photoshop online, and Pixlr.
The company will cancel recurring payments for current subscribers, and is offering a refund to anyone who subscribed in the past thirty days. Past subscribers will remain “Blue Supporters” on the site, and will get first dibs at upcoming alpha product releases.
